South Shore Adventure - RE-15
Experience the falls at Saljalandsfoss and Skogarfoss, stand behind the water and take in the massive rock formations
On this waterfall excursion, you will be able to stand directly behind the falls at Seljalandsfoss and stand directly before the falls at Skogarfoss. The black rock formations are huge and breathtaking.
The Seljalandsfoss waterfall is unique among the many falls in Iceland in that there is a walking path that allows visitors to walk behind the falls. Though more common in parts of the world with different types of geology, this is the only known falls in Iceland where visitors can walk behind the falls!
Skogafoss falls are at the edge of a cliff where Iceland's coastline used to be. The cliffs parallel the coastline for hundreds of kilometers and create a clear divide between the highlands and lowlands of Southern Iceland. The falls themselves are some of the largest in Iceland, with a drop of 60 meters and a width of 25 meters.
A trail on the Eastern side of the falls leads over a pass between glaciers and eventually continues as a well-known trekking route that is home to an ultramarathon every July. Though they share a name, Laugavegur, the route is not to be confused with the major roadway in Reykjavik.
While this excursion focuses on Iceland waterfalls, we also travel Iceland's South Coast as far as Vík í Mýrdal (Vík), a small village bordered by tall bird cliffs. While Vík is a small community, it is the only stop for many kilometers and therefore important for travelers of Iceland's perimeter highway, called the Ring Road.
The beaches at Vík are acclaimed to be some of the most beautiful in the world with black sand and large black basalt columns eroded by the sea.
This is a memorable journey, full of natural sights found nowhere else in the world!
