Adventurer of the Week: The Norgaards Escape and Get on a Glacier!

Tina Norgaard

They travelled as a family and had a great time! They holed themselves up in the middle of nowhere, in a cabin, and managed to do a lot of hiking as well as some star gazing from their hot pot. They came glacier walking and ice climbing with us!

What motivated you to visit Iceland?

Our younger son wanted to go on a hiking/outdoors type of vacation and asked my husband and I to join him. Our older son had visited Iceland and loved it, so that was our choice!

How long was your stay? Did you travel solo or with a group?

My husband, son and I were in Iceland for 2 weeks. We rented a little cottage in the middle of nowhere where we could see masses of stars every night from our hot pot on the deck.

Tryggvi... kept me focused and encouraged me step by step until I made it to the top. He was so patient and my sense of accomplishment was incredible!

Which tour did you take and why did you choose it?

We chose the glacier walk and ice climbing. We definitely wanted to take a glacier tour and the ice-climbing was just too tempting to leave out! It is something we have never done and seemed like such a cool thing to try.

What is one thing you will always remember about your tour?

I will remember hanging from the side of the glacier, about half-way up, ready to give up because I didn’t think I could make it any further and listening to our guide, Tryggvi, as he kept me focused and encouraged me step by step until I made it to the top. He was so patient and my sense of accomplishment was incredible!

What is something that you learned about Iceland that surprised you?

I always do a lot of research and reading before a trip but I was still surprised by the different types of terrain.

If you had more time in Iceland, what else would you like to see and do?

On our next trip to Iceland, because I know there will be one, we would like to make it to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula and also visit the north part of the island. We’ve also talked about touring the island by camper van.

What tips do you have for people who want to visit Iceland?

Stop often, enjoy your surroundings, and take deep breaths of the wonderfully, crisp air! Also, try the Einstock beer brewed on the north of the island - fantastic!

If you describe your tour in two words, what would they be?

Simply awesome!
